Candidate Biographical Statement

Mary Lou Finley was born in Missouri in 1944, and came to California with her family in 1945. She and her family returned to Missouri in 1956, and she attended Kansas City Junior College for a year before going on to Asbury College in Kentucky, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1966. At this point she returned to California, where she worked for Los Angeles County Hospitals as a medical case worker, and took night classes at East Los Angeles College in 1967. She became an activist in the struggle against the Vietnam War through a Methodist student group.

From 1970 to 1980 she again lived in Missouri, working a series of jobs (often two at a time) as a public assistance worker, deputy juvenile officer, refugee assistance worker, day care worker and medical unit clerk. When her father retired in 1980 she moved to Tucson with her parents, but returned to Missouri again after her father's death in 1981. From 1982 to 1989 followed a succession of jobs in Missouri, Arizona, New York and New Jersey in social work, with a year-long stint as a live-in nanny.

Settling in San Diego in 1989, Mary Lou Finley has worked there as a childcare worker, behavioral technician and special education assistant, presently employed by the San Diego Unified School District. She is a member of the California School Employees Association.

Since 1990 Mary Lou Finley has been active in the Native American Rights Network. Working with people she met through this group, she became an active supporter of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, and became active in the Peace and Freedom Party in the early 1990s. She has been involved in San Diego with work against police brutality, and with local political campaigns for progressive candidates.

While she still gets in a little hiking, Mary Lou spends her limited spare time reading histories, biographies and mystery stories.

Her concern with the distorted California tax system, in which the burden has been placed mainly on working people while taxes on the rich have been cut repeatedly, has led Mary Lou Finley to seek the Peace and Freedom Party nomination for Board of Equalization, California's elected tax board. She is unopposed in the June primary election, and will face the nominees of the Republican and Democratic parties in the November general election.
